Pilar M Valenzuela Bismarck is a Peruvian linguist who works in the United States. She received a B.A. in Hispanic Linguistics & Literature and a Diploma in Anthropology from the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, as well as a Master’s and a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Oregon. Her doctoral dissertation, Transitivity in Shipibo-Konibo Grammar, received the 2003-2004 "Mary R. Haas Book Award" granted by the Society for the Study of the Indigenous Languages of the Americas.

Valenzuela is interested in functional-typological syntax, language contact & change, indigenous South American languages, Spanish Linguistics, and anthropological linguistics. She has published a book entitled Relativization in Shipibo-Konibo: a typologically-oriented study and various articles, especially on the languages of the Pano and Kawapana families; topics include synchronic & diachronic syntax, historical linguistics, ethnobiological taxonomy, and language contact. Recently, she co-edited a book with colleagues from Leiden University and the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, honoring renowned Peruvian linguist Rodolfo Cerrón-Palomino: Estudios sobre Lenguas Andinas y Amazonicas: Homenaje a Rodolfo Cerron-Palomino:

Together with Shipibo female leader and artisan Agustina Valera Rojas, she is author of Koshi Shinanya Ainbo: el testimonio de una mujer shipiba, the first bilingual testimony of an indigenous Amazonian woman, which was published in Peru by the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos. Outside the field of Linguistics, Valenzuela wrote a short story Lecciones de Mujeres y Arena inspired in her experiences in Villa El Salvador.

Valenzuela has been awarded the prestigious Wang-Fradkin Professorship in Scholarly Excellence for 2006-2008, as well as NSF grant BCS-0853285 to document the languages of the Kawapanan family in 2009-2011. She has also obtained grants from institutions such as the Endangered Language Fund to support language revitalization efforts in Amazonian communities.

Valenzuela has also worked as researcher, instructor and consultant in language development and intercultural bilingual education among indigenous peoples of Peru and Bolivia, both in the Andes and the Amazon.
